Physical forcing of phytoplankton dynamics in the <scp>Al‐Wajh</scp> lagoon (Red Sea)

چکیده

Coastal lagoons are biodiversity hotspots that support neighboring ecosystems and various services. They can exhibit distinct biophysical characteristics compared to the adjacent open sea act paradoxically as autonomous ecosystems. Using remotely sensed observations state-of-the-art numerical simulations, role of water column hydrodynamics in shaping seasonal succession phytoplankton biomass was investigated for a non-estuarine coastal lagoon situated northeastern Red Sea. Observations reveal blooms inside occur during distinctively different period sea. We provide evidence this striking difference is due contrasting hydrodynamic conditions between outside lagoon, through their effects on stratification regulate nutrient availability hence favorable sustain rapid growth. The proposed mechanism may offer new insights into understanding dynamics other tropical regions global oceans.

Population dynamics of the shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus in the Yemeni Red Sea waters

Length-based analyses were conducted to assess the stock of the green tiger shrimp Penaeus semisulcatus. Monthly carapace length frequency data were collected from commercial catches at two main landing sites on the Yemeni Red Sea coast for eight months. Growth parameters, mortalities, exploitation rate and yield per recruit were estimated for this species in this area. The estimated growth par...

Phytoplankton dynamics in the Gulf of Aqaba (Eilat, Red Sea): a simulation study of mariculture effects.

The northern Gulf of Aqaba is an oligotrophic water body hosting valuable coral reefs. In the Gulf, phytoplankton dynamics are driven by an annual cycle of stratification and mixing. Superimposed on that fairly regular pattern was the establishment of a shallow-water fish-farm initiative that increased gradually until its activity was terminated in June 2008. Nutrient, water temperature, irradi...
